ITL516: Assessment Analysis

ITL516_w1_AssessAnalysis_Hayden

In this lesson, we were charged to:

Use the supplied student worksheets at your chosen grade level and read the student descriptions to analyze the student samples supplied. Create a graph to illustrate the data and results by skill. You will need to unpack the standard you selected to identify the skills students need to demonstrate mastery. The graph should organize results by content standard for the entire group of students (please reference the Common Core Mathematics Companion text).

Candidates must analyze the assessments, articulate:

For the Whole Group:

  • What are the misconceptions?
  • What do they know?
  • What additional information might you need in regards to assessing math?
  • What questions would you need to ask to determine if they are developmentally ready?
  • What are the potential barriers to their learning?
  • What are limitations of the assessment measure?

Select three students to conduct an analysis of the individual student data (student with special needs, English Language Learner, student needs social-emotional support):

  • Analyze individual student results.
  • Determine student assets you should consider for reteaching and future lessons.
  • Determine student needs you should consider for reteaching and future lessons.

This course has allowed me to gain a better understanding of the importance of understanding who my students are, where they come from, their home life, and where they are at academically and social-emotionally. This course specifically allowed me to dive deeper and understand how all of these variables affect a student’s ability to work productively at school. This course also provided the materials necessary to develop and understanding of how to assess a students abilities and use those assessments to create specific and achievable goals to meet certain standards.

The key practices I am taking away from not only this class, but this assignment is that all students are in different places in their educational journey- every student is successful at certain tasks and needs additional help in other areas. This assignment in particular taught me that while all students may be learning the same lesson, each student is at a different level- some may be below grade level or above- and it is our job as educators to help them excel. To implement this in the classroom, I need to be aware of each student’s ability and their progress, as well as different methods and strategies to instruct them. I need to create both class and individual goals to help students thrive and meet the standards.

Through my time in this class, I have had the opportunity to reflect on both my skills and overall teaching ability. I now know how important it is to really break down standards and understand exactly what needs to be taught and how to get students to understand that material, and if they don’t understand, the different strategies and teaching methods to help them.
